Glycemic index is the index, which relates to the measurement or
identification of impact of food on the blood sugar level of humans.
Different types of foods have different impact on blood sugar level;
some may raise it more than others may. Foods that break down quickly
during the process of digestion have the highest glycemic index and
they are also known as dietary glycemic index. Glucose, a type of
sugar, which forms after breaking of food in the body, is the main
source of energy to human body. Glycemic index helps in measuring that
how fast the glucose travels and how a food affects blood glucose
level. Foods with high index value raise blood sugar level more as
compared to foods with low glycemic index value.
Health is a concern for all today, whether it is about child's
health or an adult's health almost everyone today is suffering from
one or the other problem, which may include diabetes, high blood
pressure, and obesity. Among all the above problems, obesity is the
major one. Having a low sugar level or having a low glycemic index
food is like a treatment to reduce blood sugar level, which apparently
helps in the treatment of epilepsy. Dietary fiber also helps in
reducing glycemic index. So having a high dietary fiber diet, will
help in reducing blood sugar level. Ranking is given from zero to
100. Eating pure glucose will have a ranking of 100. Food with the
index ranking of 95 will give glucose as it is having a pure glucose
but the food with index rating of 20 will not raise sugar level that
much.
Now, body of different people reacts differently to a food that is
why glycemic index cannot be generalized to one, it is different for
different people. Foods that have high carbohydrate content have high
glycemic index and respond immediately to blood while foods with low
glycemic index reacts slowly and gradually with the blood. Pasta and
potatoes are examples of food items, which have high glycemic
index. Brown bread, soybean etc. are examples of foods with low
glycemic index.
A proper level of glucose is to be maintained if that is not done
then that person feels weak who have very low level of glucose. People
tend to stop eating food with carbohydrates in order to lose their
weight, because of this, their glucose level is very low, and they
feel weak.
Foods with low glycemic acid are:
Mixed grain, pumpernickel, soybean, lentils, all bran, apple, milk,
yogurt, whole wheat, frozen green peas, chilies, lettuce, green beas,
onion, red pepper, raw carrot, broccoli etc. Vegetables include sweet
corn, cauliflower, mushroom, cabbage, tomatoes, prunes, plums,
cherries, coconut and kiwi. Coconut milk, peach, canned fresh juice,
orange, tomato soup, strawberries, spaghetti, brown rice, yam, soy
milk, whole milk and skimmed milk are some of the examples of foods
with low glycemic index. In addition, custard, pearled barley, sweet
potato, sponge cake, nutella, walnuts, jam, corn chips, cashew nuts,
peanuts, nuts and raisins are included in this list.
