A huge misconception about weight control is counting calories. While there is some validity to it, way too much emphasis is put on how many calories you are taking in as opposed to the source of those calories. This is the reason familiarity with the glycemic index is vital. The glycemic index of a food is, simply put, a measure of how fast your body absorbs sugar from a food. One food may be higher in calories than another food but if the glycemic index of the second food (with less calories) is significantly higher than the first food it will be more harmful, in terms of weight gain, than the higher calorie food.
